June 28, 2020 – Losing Our Heritage

Pastor’s Corner:
Losing our History
Many of us have watched in horror as rioters have destroyed statues and
monuments around our nation and around the world. When statues of
anti-slavery heroes are being destroyed, and war memorials from WWII
and Vietnam, this is no longer about anger over police brutality. So what
is happening? There is a deliberate effort now to erase history. This is a
danger in regard to our Christian history as well. When we don’t know
where we have come from, we can’t really understand where we are
now, nor can we chart our future. There is a lot of truth in the adage:
“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” While we might
feel helpless to stop the destruction from happening, we can do
something very important – we can immerse ourselves in our history,
learn from both the mistakes and the successes of our ancestors, so that
we can pass the valuable lessons of history – both American history and
Church history – on to our children and grandchildren. If you would like to
learn more about your Catholic heritage, there are some great videos in
FORMED, or contact me for book recommendations.
